Stewardship: An Essential Component in the Crackdown Against Unregistered Pesticides – FPA
Rogelio Tanguid, the CAR Regional Officer of the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA), views stewardship as a crucial element in the effort to halt the proliferation of illegal and substandard pesticides in the market. In an interview, Tanguid revealed that they have observed numerous illegal peddlers preying on Benguet farmers by selling unregistered products at trading posts. According to him, these products failed to obtain licenses due to bans in other countries, given the harm they inflict on produce, farmers, and ultimately, consumers of agricultural products.
The office has conducted two major operations, resulting in charges and fines against two distributors. However, despite these efforts, many peddlers persist in selling these harmful products. They have even utilized social media platforms such as Facebook Marketplace, TikTok, Lazada, and Shopee to market these products. Tanguid expressed uncertainty about the origin of these products but noted that many have markings in Thai, Malaysian, and Indonesian. Tanguid lamented that some unscrupulous peddlers resort to diluting the contents of registered products, repackaging them, and selling them for ten times the price of the original product. He emphasized the importance of the partnership with CropLife in creating informational materials about the impact of these products, such as posters, for their stewardship program. “Our partnership with CropLife is very important because we can use the help on creating information materials about the impact of these products. Posters and other materials are very important in our stewardship program,” he said. He also warned unscrupulous traders against selling substandard products to hardworking farmers striving for a good harvest. "To our farmers, only buy registered products to ensure their performance. We also monitor stores to verify the legality and registration of these products, unlike strangers offering dubious deals," he added. |
